Chapter 12

Robin and Lee waved goodbye to Ed and raced to her SUV, intending to drive to Edgewood. There, they would question Nora and Connor Boyd about Letitia and the photograph thin, wispy Heather had left. It was almost 2:30 p.m. on a beautiful cloudless day.

“Do you mind driving?” Robin called out as she hopped in the passenger seat. She flashed him an amorous glance. “I thought I’d set up navigation to Elk Valley High School with my GPS.” She held up her cell phone.

“Sure.” Lee nodded in agreement.

“Thanks so much.” She smiled easily.

He shuffled to the driver’s side and slid into the bucket seat. “Buckle up.”

They shared a smile, and he started the motor.

As they left the parking lot, Robin browsed for the school’s location. “Got it. Should be a pretty straight shot from Starry Hill. Just head south on Highway 212.”

The vehicle sped up along the route.

“I can’t wait to tell you what else happened this morning.” Robin turned the GPS navigator’s voice on to direct Lee and placed the cellular device on the center console. “I’ve had a crazy day. First thing, I stopped by Letitia’s house—where she used to live—and met her housemate, Evelyn Morgan. She’s the one who was attacked and robbed. You know, the one with the Doberman who bit the thief.”

“I remember.” Lee’s gaze remained on the road.

While he drove, she filled him in on her conversation with Evelyn Morgan, including the fact that Evelyn was the one who’d lied about Letitia’s previous job and had given her a glowing recommendation. “Letitia strung along quite a few different men. Evelyn didn’t think Connor Boyd was the one who killed her. It didn’t add up that he’d be hunting for a photo album since his wife was aware of his affair. Plus, Hastings said he has an alibi.”

“Tell me more.”

“Evelyn told me Letitia was in love with someone else, but she didn’t know who . . . or wasn’t willing to say. I believe Evelyn was guarded about what she’d reveal.”

“Makes it harder when you don’t have the whole story.” Lee glanced at Robin briefly as he gripped the steering wheel. “You and I put Connor Boyd on our list of suspects, but you weren’t sure if he was at The Gem that night.”

“Correct. I’ve never met him—unless he was in costume.”

“Tons of loose ends.” Lee rolled his eyes as he drove.

“That’s why we’re doing exactly the right thing in questioning Connor Boyd. He likely holds the key to information we need.”

“You’re right,” Lee said. “A murderer is running loose, and I don’t want you or me to be the next victims.”

Looking at Lee made her wish she had a bench seat instead of buckets. How she’d like to scoot closer to him. How happy she was that they’d made up. She had overreacted out of jealousy.

Edgewood was about an hour south of Starry Hill and had a population of roughly four thousand people. The highway route had little traffic, and the surroundings—blue sky, evergreens, scattered ponds, and a mix of cabins tucked into the trees—made the trip enjoyable.
